Environmental problems are a reflex of deeper Issues

Hi!

If you take a look at many of the forums of ESP, specially in My Responsability and Society&Society, you get to the conclusion that water problems are always caused by the same factors: greed and indiference are the main ones.

If water is polluted, it's probably because the owner of a large factory didn't want to abdicate of a fraction of his profit to protect the Environment. If there is waste of water, probably it's because most people only care about problems when they affect them directly. If there is water scarcity in poor countries, it's probably because rich countries and people in those countries aren't as sharing as they had the possibility to be.

So, I think water problems and encironmental problems in general are the reflex of moral issues and they could be solved by love to others and to Nature.

I think it's all a mater of raising youngsters properly. Education is very important and it has been neglected.
It's also a matter of understanding that, even by loosing something individually today, we will all reap more benefits in the long term by having a healthy Environment. If we use all water today, how will we survive later?

What do you think?
Do you agree with this point?
How do you think we could reverse the situation?
Do you agree with the idea that Northern European countries are the most eco-respecting countries and that this is due to their investment in the Education of their people?

school education re environmental issues

Also, schools should educate children from a young age and raise their awareness on the importance of the matter. There are so many environmental matters that youngsters should become aware of. At the end of the day, if you grow up beleiving in something, we all know how it then becomes like a lifetime habit and if children set their ways from a young age they are not likely to change as adults.

completely agree

As I said in a previous post as well, I think many of the problems that have been created - in these topics its all about water, its pollution, the danger that water will be almost extinct in the future, etc. are a result of the people's mentality. We seem to all care about ourselves and how we run our lifes as best we can, without caring about the results of our actions. As you said, industries do not care about the environmental damage they cause, as long as the business runs as it should. Take for example starbucks and their policy about keeping the taps running for clearer water. Their response was that as long as that complies with the UN standards policies then there should be no problem. Well, the problem is there but..who cares?
