Water in the media

Bianca Buhl's picture

Many of you have mentioned the importance of the media in shaping people's views on water. Do you feel that the topic is addressed often enough and in an appropriate manner? I would be interested in comparing media coverage on water in different countries.

What are the last articles, news pieces, TV features that you have seen in your country related to water?

Are there certain publications or journalists that specialise in the subject?

Please post links and rough summaries of the media pieces, if they are not in English. Thank you!

Bianca

"Hydrologists and journalists

"Hydrologists and journalists have a lot in common. Both report on watershed events. Both deal with highly polarised subject matter. And if election day ends in an instant runoff, we'll be there. Watching. Reporting.

If you look at the media cycle, depicted accurately below, is it any wonder hydrology and journalism are so tightly coupled?

Here at Cr!key Creek, we'll bring you those news stories you read in the paper, that analysis of current events. But we'll throw in, absolutely free, some insight of what's going on behind the scenes - in terms of water resources. We'll also bring you news and analysis you won't read in the paper, but perhaps should. Or idle banter that, okay, perhaps shouldn't, but is interesting anyway.

Don't think this is a one-way street, though. Oh no. Nor is it the autobahn. Think of Cr!key Creek as your local pedestrian farmers market. Wander around, chat with the locals, exchange recipes for stone soup... Seriously, the conversations and debates that I hope we'll have here will be all the better with audience participation. And if we're getting all philosophical, I am also your audience.

So, stay tuned - set that bookmark, subscribe to that RSS feed - and we'll have a look at what's going on with our water, both near (New Zealand) and far."

Networking of media for

Networking of media for improving water management in the Arab world is an important outcome of this workshop. Media play an important role in educating children as well as the politicians. Together we should invest and prepare the people, without that water and irrigation technologies will not work. I am glad to see your enthusiasm to move ahead. This is a good start for a better future. When you return to your countries you are our ambassadors for the Arab water world”, Deputy Minister Hussein I. El-Atfy told the journalists at the handing over of the workshop certificates.

Each day, many millions of

Each day, many millions of people in developing countries must walk long distances to get the water they need for drinking, cooking, and bathing. Often, this water is contaminated. Water.org, co-founded by Matt Damon and Gary White, helps people in developing countries obtain safe drinking water and basic sanitation (toilets). Working in partnership with those in need, Water.org has transformed hundreds of communities in eight countries – Bangladesh, El Salvador, Ethiopia, Honduras, Guatemala, India, Kenya, and the Philippines – with access to a safe, reliable source of water and basic sanitation.

Tosun states that Turkey has a very important role in the solution of water problems in Middle East. If the countries in Middle East do not try to find fair and sensible solutions on the basis of international law, it is likely to occur wars for water. Therefore, each country must contribute to have a solution.

Erdoğan presented a way of solution to Syria for the water problem. : The Prime Minister of Turkey, Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, demonstrated that we can't shape our foreign politics by the directives of some people. We just direct our policies by ourselves. Moreover, Erdoğan told constructive declarations about the water problem between Turkey and Syria.

Advertisements in Spain

In Spain we have a lot of advertisements which purpose it's to make people to save water and to promote sharing water (a transfer wants to be built from the north part of Spain to the south, where there is more lack of it)
There I leave two.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T6AjI7VxpvM

In this first one the girl is playing with tubes, each one representing one of the main rivers in Spain. As the Segura (in the south) sounds badly, she decides to take water from the Ebro (in the north) which is the one with more water. Finally the advertisement says: The appropiate solutions are always the most solidary ones. Water for everyone.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iVMuZ023tBM&feature=related

This second one, even though it's very old, it is very popular in Spain, and it's often played, specially in summer. When the girl it's going to throw the paper to the toilet, her friend says: don't throw it there, you will waste water. And she answers: It's just a few litres!
But, the total is what counts. In all of us it's to change that process.

The first one is from the government in Murcia, and the second from the Ministry of the environment

tv campaign in slovakia

These days here in Slovakia we have the campaign to drink the tap water because according to research we have one of the best-quality water in Europe. It says that we should drink it also due to price which is incomparably cheaper than bottled water. I think that we should be glad that we have water like this, especially when we can be sure it’s not contaminated.
Here is the video with the commercial:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=roIU1ZD2mOI

It is also focused on children because child’s voice says:
“Do you know what we have that children from around the world can be jealous of?
It is tap water because it healthy, tasty, cheap and our mom doesn’t have to drag heavy bottles from shops.”
This commercial is sponsored by Ministry of Health of Slovak Republic.
