Summary ESP 2008

European Science Parliament 2008

The European Science Parliament held it's first meeting on October 09 and 10, 2008. Under the Patronage of Janez Potocnik, European Commissioner for Science and Research, the focal topic was "Europe energised - will lights go out in 2050?". The issues of energy and sustainability were subdivided into five subtopics: Technology, Polics, Society, Economy and Personal Responsibility.

During the Conference, the young generation, represented by 48 pupils and 24 university students, dicussed together with 24 citizens, who were not professionally engaged in the topic. A total of 24 experts from science, media, politics, NGOs and economy completed the ESP 2008.

The parliamentary Conference was interconnected with a Web-Portal, where forums provided the possibility to discuss the focal topic for about 600 registered users from March 2008 onwards. Beginning in September 2008, the Conference was thematically prepared with the help of Wiki editorial systems by all participants. Online discussions as well as the Conference were conducted in English and accompanied by five moderators, each specialising on one of the five subtopics.

Thus, experts from all over Europe, and from various professions, were brought together with the interested public in order to formulate a collective Statement, the "Aachen Declaration", which was forwarded to the European Institutions as recommendatory portrayal of opinions.
